What is a BER

BER stands for Building Energy Rating and indicates the energy efficiency and carbon dioxide emissions of your house or apartment. Properties are rated on a scale from A-G. A-rated homes are the most energy efficient. Your BER Assessor will conduct a BER assessment on your home and provide you with a BER Certificate and Advisory Report.

Why does energy efficiency matter?

A more energy efficient home means for you:

  1. A warmer and more comfortable home,
  2. Healthier living and good indoor air quality,
  3. Cheaper to run (reduced energy consumption will save you money on your bills),
  4. Increased value of your property for sale and rental market,
  5. Reduced impact on the environment (outdoor air temperature and quality),
  6. Smarter use of resources.

Why does carbon dioxide emissions matter?

The recently published Climate Action Bill reinforces the need for Ireland to decarbonise our future. Energy use in our homes is responsible for almost a quarter of Ireland’s total carbon dioxide emissions (CO2). Increased CO2 concentration in the atmosphere traps heat around the Earth like a blanket and is the cause for global warming which results in climate change and bad air quality.

As of May 2020 over 1.3 million homes are well below a C rating. In addition, 98% of home heating is sourced from fossil fuels such as oil, gas, coal and peat. Irish homes use 7% more energy and emit 58% more Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG include Carbon Dioxide, Methane and Nitrous Oxides) than the EU average.

Less is best and makes your home more comfortable and greener.
